Original Composition Story Behind the Music       At the time, I wanted to create an arrangement that would be worthy of being posted upon a website called Overclocked Remix, a website that judges and posts worthy arrangements of video game music. Thus, since I had some equipment available to me through the Riverside Community College MIDI Lab, I decided to arrange a very memorable song from a Sega Master System game titled California Games. The specific song that I chose was the one that accompanied the hacky-sack competition in the game.       Armed with a clarinet, I went into the MIDI Lab and embarrasingly played my instrument into the microphone. The performance wasn't very good, but I didn't want to play the instrument in front of the others in the room again and was stuck with it. I mixed it with a great interpretation of the hacky-sack melody that had all of the Venice Beach, CA, musical instruments possible. This piece ended up becoming one of the most energized I have ever wrote and is still a shining light in comparison to many other of my songs. The best aspect of this piece was the build and transition to various places in the music. Still in the simple A B A fomat, I was able to put a few twists and unexpected musical ideas within the three minutes of time. I even sampled in the sounds of crashing waves and bustling crowds. Even the voices of classmates were used as part of the crowd.       This piece is exciting and conforms the story that I assigned the piece. One person walks from beach to beach on the California coast with a hacky-sack in his pocket and a music box around his shoulders. When he enters a populated beach he causes others to grab their hacky-sacks and instruments to join in all of the fun. Eventually the music and competition becomes too intense for the community and they all fall onto the soft sand of the beach, leaving the "Foot Bag Man" to walk to another beach.       This piece of music was sent to Overclocked Remix but I never recieved a response. I have since decided that my music does not belong on that website--it belongs soley on my own website. |
