Story Behind the Music
I like to play basketball at my nearby public park. Sometimes I play against a large group of arrogant teens. Sometimes I play against one humble adult local. Sometimes I help young children learn technique. Sometimes I practice on my own with a gang laughing at me from a distance. No matter how I play or practice the sport of basketball there is one thing that always remains the same. This constant is the satisfaction of shooting the basketball through the basket and obtaining a "swish." Even the word is very soothing. It is, strangely, a relaxing experience that only lasts for a split second. It is one reason why I continue to practice the sport. It is one reason why I tolerate those laughing at me, the skinny white boy, playing basketball. I have even recieved a nickname playing at the park: "Banana Boy." Little vulgar? I don't care, I play the game for the swish!
I sat down to write this piece of classical music with the word and experience of "swish" in my mind. I had to legnthen the emotion that I recieve from "swish." Although nothing could replace the real thing, this short piece accomplishes it to a large degree. I intended to use many volume controllers throughout the piece to express seemless transactions and long flows. Say the word slowly then listen to this song.
